Taking A 1932 Rockne Studebaker Automobile From Wreck To Rocking
A few years ago, when Braam du Toit showed me the 1932 Studebaker Rockne “wreck” he had towed from his father’s farm some two hours away, I just shook my head at his plan to “take dad for a ride in this car again soon…”.
I just couldn’t imagine it at that point, but after a couple of weeks, a few things had started to take shape, and before long I realized that Braam meant business with his particular antique Rockne automobile…
The last time this Studebaker Rockne (manufactured by the Studebaker Brothers, Studebaker Motor Company) was driven, was when his father took it out to his farm in Caledon after having purchased it for the princely sum of £12 in 1960.
Twenty-seven years later Braam’s father stripped the antique car in preparation for restoration. There was never time, though, and the project had to wait till Braam fetched it from the farm in mid-2000.
According to Braam almost all the parts were still there, apart from a few items like the mascot and the twin horns. The car needed some serious work, though. When he fetched it he could still smell the rat-nests he found inside the door panels. The metal parts will be acid-dipped to get rid of the rust.
In fact, after barely 18 months, Braam was able to fulfil his promise, and the beautifully rebuilt 1932 Rockne cruised the neigborhood with Braam and his dad in the cabin. Guess this is one Studebaker car that won’t be for sale soon…
Recently I managed to catch Braam and his beloved antique car, the 1932 Studebaker Rockne for a quick photo session, as you can see on this page.
